Protect-UV Servicing

From time to time, filtration and ultraviolet systems require replacement & cleaning. At the point of sale/supply, it is a great opportunity for you to establish with the customer that you will follow up when filters are due for replacement and when UV systems are due for servicing.

Through the PODAC management system, you will be notified when it is time for your clients system to be cleaned. It is then up to you to contact the client, and organise a time for cleaning.

Don’t rely on the customer following you up! By being a little proactive, you will you will build solid repeat business.

9.0.1 Equipment Required

Clean towels/rags
Shifter/Spanner
Vacuum cleaner

Filters
UV lamps/quartz
O'Rings

9.0.2 Safety Tips

Gloves and eye protection not required for this task as no chemicals are used.

Be aware that electrical cables may be found near the work area.

Refer to Module 6: Health and Safety, Safe Handling of Chemicals section

9.0.3 Time Required

Ensure sufficient travel time to arrive at job on time
The time required to complete this task will vary depending on difficulty with sink and under sink access.
Time to next job
Expectations for task = half an hour.

9.0.4 Job Preparation

On arrival at the job, converse with the owner to understand the exact service required, cross referencing with quote
Prepare equipment and transfer to work area.
All local plumbing codes must be followed.

9.0.5 Clean-up

Pack-Up. Ensure all equipment has been retrieved, packed into toolboxes, and replaced back onto your vehicle.
Tag Job with provided PWS stickers
Equipment Check. As you are packing equipment, check functionality to ensure you do not have any damaged or broken equipment.
Cleaning. Always leave clients premises clean and dry. Remove off cuts, rubbish and used packaging, and put into bins or carry offsite.
1. Equipment should have minimal cleaning requirements.

9.0.6 Administration

Data-base entry: After completing the job, and at home, enter the details of the job into the “database”. This will prepare you for future servicing.

9.1 Filter Changing (Undersink)

Filters should be changed every 6 - 12 months, or after 8 000 Litres, or if flow-rate decreases markedly. Not changing your filters regularly can cause bacteria to grow and contaminate the water

For correct operation of cleaning this product, it is essential to observe the manufacturers instructions.

This process is relatively simple, and therefore, does not need further technical instructions

9.1.1 Operations

Turn off water supply to filter unit.
Open faucet to help de-pressurise system.
Unscrew filter housings by turning counter clockwise with spanner provided.
Remove old filters and discard. Then follow sanitising procedure.
Insert new filters into appropriate housings.
Replace "O" rings as necessary. Be sure "O" ring is clean, lubricated and seated properly when tightening. Never use Vaseline or any other petroleum based sealant. It may breakdown the "O" ring or the seat of the filter housing and cause a failure (leak).
Flush the system for 3-5 minutes to get rid of any carbon fines. Then follow normal system start up procedures
Follow Sanitising instructions Section 6.0 for filtration replacement

CAUTION: Do not use with water that is Microbiologically unsafe or with water of unknown quality without adequate disinfection before or after the system. Systems certified for cyst reduction may be used on disinfected water that may contain filterable cysts.

9.1.2 Trouble Shooting

Problem	Solution
Little water from faucet	Filters clogged. Replace filters.
Kinked tube	Un-kink tube. If damaged, replace tube.
Low water pressure	Increase water pressure to 35 psi

9.2 UV Sterilization Systems

One of the most important issues for UV systems is the issue of adequate pre-filtration.

Where tanks are situated in clear areas that are away from trees, the water quality may be acceptable to allow UV’s to operate efficiently, employing single unit filtration. Unfortunately, not all situations such as this exist and a greater degree of water quality is required.

The accepted method for pre-filtration is a twin 20” unit containing firstly, 1 x 20 micron pleated washable filter, followed by 1 x 1 micron graded density poly spun cartridge. This degree of filtration affords the greatest degree of protection from colour and cyst infestations.

Graded density filters incorporate dual gradient depth technology for maximum dirt holding capacity.

You will need to take particular notice of the above as all major UV manufacturers and suppliers currently recommend this method of pre-filtration prior to presentation of water to the UV system.

9.2.1 Problem Solving

A) UV Water Leak

If small amounts of water appear in the test tube type quartz sleeves in UVG 60 litre per minute UV kits, you will need to check the gland nut is secured tightly.

The problem only occurs in systems mounted in a vertical position, especially in areas receiving recent high rainfalls.

The supplier has advised that the gland nut on all units is IP 65 rated, and when tightened correctly will not allow water entry to the reactor tubes.

To ensure that you do not experience this issue, please ensure that you use a tool (eg spanner/shifter) to tighten the gland nut appropriately

B) Stainless Steel Screws

Older UV systems were installed with UV screws holding the Stainless Steel cap in place. While this is typically suitable for all weather conditions, the stainless steel marrying up with other metals can cause seizure of the screen in the housing.

You may be required to drill these out and replace the screws.

Remember to use Food Grade Grease with the screws when fixing the nut on top of the chamber/reactor (if present). Newer UV units have a boot or PVC cover.

9.3 Water Softeners

Check normal programming operation
1. Backwash,
2. Brine drawer
3. Rapid rinse
4. Brine fill
Turn Pump off, and release water pressure
Check Salt levels (in brine bin)
On Autotrol, take out the screen and jet clean if required.
Replace or wash out pre-filtration
Resume normal operation once the pump is turned back on.

9.4 Servicing/Maintenance of Reverse Osmosis Systems

Check normal programming operation
1. Backwash,
2. Brine drawer
3. Rapid rinse
4. Brine fill
Turn Pump off, and release water pressure
Check Salt levels (in brine bin)
On Autotrol, take out the screen and jet clean if required.
Replace or wash out pre-filtration
Resume normal operation once the pump is turned back on.

9.4.1 Maintenance

1Turn feed water valve off
2Turn off storage tank tap
3Unscrew and dispose of the Sediment cartridge. Reinstall new Sediment cartridge in same position.
4Unscrew and dispose of the Pre-Carbon cartridge
5Unscrew the Post-Carbon cartridge and reinstall it in the position of the pre-Carbon cartridge. The Post-Carbon cartridge has only been used as a polishing filter, hence it can be re-used as the pre-Carbon filter.
6The Reverse Osmosis membrane needs to be replaced every 3-6 years, dependent on water quality and usage. Your pure water quality can be tested with a conductivity meter measuring total dissolved solids (TDS) which will indicate the rejection of contaminants ratio. To remove RO membrane, remove the stem elbow (with black hosing inserted) from the base of the membrane. Unscrew the membrane cartridge and dispose. To install the new membrane, screw it into the head and re-attach the stem elbow to the base of the membrane.

7Install the new Carbon cartridge to the Post-Carbon head
8Turn on storage tank tap
9Turn the feed water valve on
10Open the pure waterspout on top of the sink and allow to run for a few minutes to flush the system. You may notice discolouration and/or aeration of the pure water. This is normal and results from flushing the carbon fines and the release of oxygen inherent in the new Post-Carbon cartridge - this is non-toxic and will clear shortly.

9.4.3 Testing the System

If there was slime present in the carbon housing and also in the feed end of the RO chamber, it is possible that some bacteria may have gone through the membrane.

At this point, it is essential to pull the membrane out and flush out the housing with the same spray. Re-fit the membrane and load it up with solution. Re-fit all connections and open the tank tap to allow the solution to pump in to the tank.

TIP: When you arrive at the location and have come to the conclusion that the RO may be affected by bacteria, empty the whole accumulator tank of t water because it is likely to be contaminated and this will save you time waiting for it to dump later.

Dumping is also a good test as to whether an RO system is performing well as too how much water it can make.

When the system is primed with biocide, and that includes the lines, you re-open the tank tap and fill it up. It takes about 10-15 minutes to get the solution through and into the tank and it will kill bacteria on contact. Dump the tank again.

With the system in operation, to be sure of good performance, the following applies:

Perform a TDS test on the feed waterSame on the waste flowSame on the product water

The TDS test on the product water should very minimal as a rule of thumb(Depends on feed quality)

The TDS test on the waste should be considerably higher than the feed water as it is now a concentrate

9.5 Other Products and Services

9.5.1 Product Sales direct to Customer

AqueousPro™ (7.9%)

Use of this product is for Customer purchase. Typically this will be for water tanks, caravans, motor homes, boats and similar applications.

This product is available for purchase by the customer directly through you. Instructions are provided with the product.

Using the table above, select an appropriate does for the tank capacity, taking in consideration the water quality.

The initial dose should always be higher as you will be treating the water added and the contamination in the tank from previous use.

Add AqueousPro™ (7.9%) directly to the tank and fill the tank with water.

Run 1-2 litres of water through any taps to make sure treatment reaches all plumbing.

Leave at least 1-2 hours before use to allow time for AqueousPro™ (7.9%) to reduce contamination.

Use a test strip to determine the appropriate concentration after 12 to 24 hours contact time.

The ideal residual level should be 5-10ppm (shown on the test strip) with an upper level of 15ppm maximum.

Providing the tank is effectively de-contaminated, this water may be stored for up to 12 months if no untreated water is added.

Safety Directions

Not to be Taken. Harmful. Avoid contact with skin and eyes. If spilt on skin or eyes, immediately wash off with plenty of water. Wash hands after use. Store upright in original container in a cool ventilated area out of direct sunlight. Shelf Life: 24 months in sealed original container.

9.5.2 Water Coolers/Chillers

Most internal reservoir water chillers have a single or twin pre-filter.

This filter will be installed the same way as a PWO-12 filter fit ¼” fittings.

To service:

Firstly turn off water to external filter housing
Release pressure and completely empty the reservoir tank into your rectangle bucket
Once this is completed, remove the lid to the reservoir tank and plate inside, use your sanitiser spray and gloves to wipe out the whole tank.
Replace filters in the single or twin filter unit, then be sure to run the first amount of water into the sink or bucket. We do this for the excess carbon within the filters and you do not want to leave the customer with black water.
Once the filters have been flushed, reinstall the hose to the unit and re-fill the reservoir.
Clean up, place a service sticker and provide the customer with an invoice.

NOTE: With the bottle type that fills from a single or twin filter source, you must empty the bottle and clean the internal tank as per instructions above.

9.5.3 Servicing Fridge Filters

The following instructions are for servicing an external fridge filter. Remember, different fridges may have different set-ups, so refer to the manufacturers instructions where necessary.

Turn off the tap/valve
Release pressure at the fridge with a glass
Change the filter and be sure to check the flow direction
Flush out the excess carbon into your bucket
Reinstate ¼” hose, turn on tap/valve and check operation of the fridge water.
Place a PWS sticker with due service date, and clean up.
Issue invoice to the customer.

9.5.4 Shower Filters

Most shower filters are reversible, with the filter inside.

1Remove the Shower head off the shower pipe
2Unscrew the top of the shower head, creating two halves
3Remove the cartridge
4Check and replace o'rings
5Place Food Grade Grease around the rim of the new Filter
6Place the cartridge back into the housing
7Screw the lid back on
8Replace the shower head back onto the shower pipe
9Flush the shower for a few minutes, and check for any leakage around seals and where the shower head joins the shower pipe
10Clean up, and if possible, place a PWS sticker with a due service date
11Issue invoice to the customer

9.5.5 Caravan/RV/Marine filters

These filters require replacing as necessary.

For the various vehicles that have filtration systems, they typically follow a very similar process. You may need to refer to the manufacturers instructions to locate the filter system, and check for specific instructions.

1Locate filter system
2Turn off valve/tap providing water to the filter
3Release pressure in the lines but turning on a tap in the Caravan/RV/Boat
4Unscrew the filter housing
5Remove old filters and discard. Clean out the housing, and follow sanitising procedures
6Insert new filters into housing
7Replace O'rings as necessary. Be sure o'rings are clean, lubricated and seated properly when tightening. Use Food Grade Grease. Never use Vaseline or any other petroleum based sealant. It may breakdown the o'ring or the seat of the filter housing and cause a failure (leak).
8Screw the housing back on
9Release the tap/valve for water pressure to build back up and check for leaks
10Run the water for a short period of time
11Clean up, and place a PWS sticker with a due service date
12Issue invoice to the customer.

9.5.6 First Flush Systems

As defined in Module 3, Section 10.2, PWS does not perceive First Flush systems to be a suitable solution for helping keep Tanks clear of debris or dirty water.

However, you may come across First Flush systems when servicing customers.

IMPORTANT: Do not use Sanitiser to disinfect First Flush lines. There is potential for this to rupture the line as gases build up.

Best practice is to simply flush the line out with water. And to advise the customer to do so whenever there has been a dry period and rain is expected.

The First Flush system will need a valve on the end to release rubbish that is built up inside.
