A colloid is a substance microscopically dispersed evenly throughout another substance. Colloid material is sub-micron. That is, less than one micron in size. At this size, most colloids will never settle from the liquid and pass directly through most filters and membranes.

From time to time you will experience the presence of colloidal clay in drinking water supplies.

This will occur mainly in new installations on new buildings sites, the cause being that new pipe work connecting the wet system from the guttering to the holding facility becomes damaged due to soil subsidence, mainly around the tank area.

On close inspection you will notice that the water has a cloudy appearance. This is made up of very fine soil particles in almost permanent suspension.

It is highly unlikely that the particles will settle out, although some success has been achieved using our clarifier. The general rule though is to dump the bulk of the water, leaving around 600mm. Enter the tank, and scrub the walls thoroughly. Then, vacuum the base of the tank. You may need to use the brush head to achieve a good result. Finally, vacuum all contaminated water to waste.

Note; When providing this service to in-ground tanks, an amount of water should be replaced (1/3 amount of tank or better), to prevent the tank from lifting/popping out of the ground.
