Tannins are a natural organic material that can be the by-products of nature’s fermentation process, be created as water passes through peaty soil and decaying vegetation.

This can cause water to have a faint yellow to tea-like colour, and can cause yellow staining on fabrics, fixtures, china and laundry. Tannins can give an unpleasant aftertaste to water. It may also cause water to have a musty or earthy odour.

They are sometimes referred to as fulvic of humic acids and are more common in surface water supplies, lake or river sources and shallow wells than in deep wells. Water in marshy, low-lying, or coastal areas is also more susceptible to tannins.

Tannins are not considered to be a health concern. Although they are considered an aesthetic problem as they can make water unappealing to drink.

4.3.1 Case Study of Tannin Removal

PWSA has successfully supplied systems for the removal of tannin from various water sources.

One that comes to mind, was a well-known architectural business, situated on acreage in the Noosa Hinterland. This particular property was heavily wooded, with the main water catchment area covered by dense foliage.

Because the area experiences a fairly constant rainfall and many eucalypts exist, heavy tannin appeared in the stored rainwater.

The removal method employs the use of a specialised activated carbon product with a high absorbent quality.

Perhaps the down side of this process is the size of the equipment used, for example, for the process to be effective, the water must have a longer than normal contact time within the carbon e.g. each litre of water requires a contact time of 15 minutes per litre of carbon, for example, to achieve a flow rate of 30 litres per minute you would require 450 litres of carbon.

The vessel required for this application would measure 24” in diameter by 72” high.

The upside is, the system will provide clear sparkling water for a long period of time, before the carbon media requires replacement.
